Rear Turn Signal Relocation
(VLX600 - 1999 models and later ONLY)

Clean up the look of the rear of your ride
If you want to clean up the look of the rear end of your VLX, the first things that have to go are those goofy turn signals sticking out in the breeze.

Add larger saddlebags
If you have measured your ride for saddlebags and found because of the position of the stock turn signals you will have to opt for smaller size bags than you want, then you are going to love this relocation kit.

Give more clearance to the saddlebags you have
Maybe you have fitted saddlebags and those pesky turn signals are just plain in the way. If so, then you will really appreciate our rear turn signal relocation kit. It's going to look better and give much needed clearance to the saddlebags.

Rubber mounted for long bulb filament life
We retain the stock length rubber stalks but do away with the rubber mounting on the seat rail. After a 1000 miles of testing, filament life of the turn signal bulbs seems to be holding up well with any added vibrations the relocation may have induced.

For some electrical work we provide splices for joining into existing wires on the bike. If you have never used one of these splices then please click here to see how they are installed.

If you have hard-tailed or lowered your ride please click here to read a warning.

AN IMPORTANT LEGAL CONSIDERATION FOR YOU!!
Our relocation brackets will move these lights to a sensible position back near the license plate. Because we use the stock lights, we believe that your ride will still be within the existing laws and guidelines. Click here to read a small section of the DOT specifications for motorcycle lighting.

YOU NEED TO BE SURE that fitting these relocation brackets will NOT render your bike illegal for you. THE FINAL DECISION REGARDING USING THESE BRACKETS MUST REST ENTIRELY WITH YOU.

Now THAT's where the turn signals should be.

Click here to read what Don has to say about this kit.

Because this is our testbed motorcycle and we need to keep it strictly
stock, we have not removed the old license plate frame mounting
after installing the sidemount.

The center distance between the two lights is around 12-1/2". According to our reading of the DOT requirements and the lights being amber colored this spacing fits within the DOT specifications.

If in doubt about the legality of moving the turn signals to this location, please check all Local, State and Federal laws that may apply.
You may need to know them if stopped by an officer of the Law.

Here's a close up of the cut-out in the end of the license plate lamp mount. This is from one of our original prototypes and has not yet been cleaned up. It will give you a good idea of what is required to be removed for the turn signal relocation.

We provide template information to mark and make the cut outs.

Even with this messy cut-out, this view of the mount is barely visible when viewing the relocation from a few feet away.

Here's what's included in the Kit (RTSRKIT) showing the relocated stock reflector using our specially made location brackets for the holes left in the stock chrome seat rail. We do it RIGHT or we do not do it!

Naturally these are all CNC-machined from aircraft grade aluminum and we provide stainless steel fasteners.

This is the OPTIONAL drilling jig to make life easier drilling the holes in the correct spot. We provide instructions on where to drill the holes but this makes it a simple point and shoot issue. Using this jig you drill 1/8" diameter pilot holes then open them up with a 1/4" diameter drill.

This jig is machined from 1/8" thick aluminum angle. It is shaped to precisely position the pilot holes for each side. It should be usable for more than one mounting of the relocation brackets so you could share it with a VLX-riding-buddy.

For the assembly of this project you will need to crimp the connectors we supply in the kit. It is strongly recommended you purchase a set of these crimping pliers from your local auto parts/KMart/Walmart store.
They usually run to about 3 or 4 bucks and they make cutting, stripping and installing the crimps a breeze.

Good Vibrations...

These bikes vibrate really freely so a thread lock agent is not a luxury, it should be mandatory every time you assemble things on any Motorcycle.

This bottle will last for a long time considering it only takes a drop on the threads to make it stick. We can't tell you how many drops there are in the bottle, but it MUST be a LOT!!

We stock the Red and Blue thread lock.
(Actual threadlock supplied may differ from items shown here)

Red is the strongest and if applied correctly, it requires about 250+ degree heat to loosen. We have had success using a hair dryer for this purpose when disassembling. A paint stripping heat gun could also be used,
BUT great care must be exercised so you DO NOT DAMAGE paint
in the same area, as these guns can get to
900 degrees and more.
Blue is for frequently disassembled parts and only requires normal tools and a little extra pressure to loosen. Often though oil and water can degrade the locking strength a little and that's why we also offer the Red as it has a much stronger grip, but requires more effort to remove it when you need to.

  INSTALLATION NOTE!
You will need to drill some holes in the license plate mounting back plate, but once the brackets are installed and the stock parts reassembled these holes will not be visible.

You will also need to cut an opening in each side of the license plate-light mount. These openings will be partially visible when the job is completed. You can
click here to see one of our prototype cutouts.

Naturally there will be some cutting and splicing of wires to suit the new location. We also provide the extra wire and crimp splices in the kit for you to do the job right!

For some electrical work we provide splices for joining into existing wires on the bike. If you have never used one of these splices then please click here to see how they are installed.

  CAUTION!
NON STOCK REAR SUSPENSION

If you have modified the rear suspension of your VLX by hard-tailing or shortening the shock travel, be WARNED that the extra vibrations imparted to the frame will almost certainly affect the life of the filaments in ALL of the light bulbs on your ride. We retain the stock rubber stalk for the turn signals when they are relocated but we do away with the rubber mount on the seat rail. THIS MAY LEAD TO PREMATURE FILAMENT FAILURE.

So, if you have hard-tailed or lowered your ride, you need to consider carefully if the relocation kit is for you.
